Eco School

Abbey Primary prides itself on being an Eco friendly school. We have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag award 5 times and will continue to sustain the Eco Ethos within the school.

The Eco club aims to increase the environmental awareness of the children in a fun and practical way. The club meets on the first Monday of every month and occasionally at lunch times (when there is lots of Eco work to be done!)

In November we hold ‘Switch Off Fortnight’ in conjunction with ‘Join The Pod’ and in March we participate in ‘Waste Free Week’, which aims to reduce the amount of waste  which ends up in landfill sites.

A variety of wildlife is encouraged to reside in our wildlife garden and our wild flower meadow has been developed to attract lots of insects and birds. There are bird houses, bug hotels, hedgehog houses and lots more. Our polytunnel is filled with plants and vegetables and we’ve even got to cook and eat some if our own food. Mrs Hamilton and her husband have done most of the work making all the different outdoor areas, but we’ve had some outside help. If you are feeling bored and want to help we’d be happy to give you something to do!

The Eco club has also been actively involved in promoting recycling, a healthy lifestyle, important global issues and the importance of keeping our local environment a waste free area.

In summary, our Eco club is a fun and very worthwhile club.
